Her mother had named her, for her favorite state in the entire country. That in itself was a competition, considering her reporting job had warranted her to visit quite a few, forty-one out of fifty. That included oddities like Hawaii and Alaska while tornadoes had brought trips to Illinois and Mississippi when disaster struck in the form of Hurricane Katrina. But above all those shell-shocking places and cozy corners, California remained her mother's most frequent destination for work and vacation.
She had considered North Dakota as well, but the snowy peaks didn't match up to her mother's love of bright beache

He fiddled with the pencil in his right hand, unsure of what exactly he wanted to do. The paper was sitting on his desk in the middle of his fairly mundane room, looking blank and unappealing compared to the other words across the walls. The harshly black script of the rock band posters were boldly bashing him for missing their concerts, while the few and sparse homework notices he wrote on sticky notes dotted the room like white spots on a tan dog, and hey, even the words on the spines of the books jammed into the corner of his otherwise empty bookshelf looked appealing. Now that was saying something.
